North Sydney Hiking Gems

If you are like me you are probably always counting down the days until your next hike! Save this handy list for your next day off and check out these amazing hikes all in easy driving distance from the Northern suburbs of Sydney. Please check NSW National Parks announcements before attempting any of these walks to check for closures, warnings and advice.

Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park

This gorgeous park has some stunning beaches, lookouts and walks for all abilities. While she's often overlooked in favour of her southern cousin Royal National Park, don't underestimate her beauty!

Flint and Steel Beach

This 2km return will likely take you twice as long as planned, as you will be tempted to stop every 300m to admire the stunning views. Pack swimmers, towels and a picnic to make the most of this picturesque hidden beach.

Resolute Beach

This popular 6km return track is a must do in Ku-Ring-Gai and will make you feel far away from the hustle and bustle of Sydney. Beware that you may get some cardio in with lots of stairs to get down to the beach, but this is still a great walk for all abilities.

Bairne Lookout

This 9.6 km return hike follows a long and cruisy fire trail to a wonderful pay off with stunning views of Pittwater Bay. This is typically a quieter walk if you prefer a more peaceful hike away from the crowds.

Garigal National Park

Garigal National Park is nestled between St Ives and the North Shore and boasts some spectacular water views. Look out for indigenous engravings, as the park is the traditional land of the Guringai people and there are over 100 indigenous sites within the park.

The Bluff Lookout

This lookout is certainly a highlight of the Bluff track, with some expansive views of Bantry bay. You can choose to follow the track down to the water or check out the natural bridge on the connecting natural bridge track. Explore the boulders you encounter to spot indigenous engravings by the traditional Gurinagai owners.

Two Creeks Track

This lush 7.5 km return walk is a surprising gem given how nearby it its suburban surroundings, but I promise you will feel far away from the suburbs in this natural corridor. This walk is partially within Garigal National park, but dog owners will be pleased to know portions of this walk are dog friendly.

Brisbane Water National Park

This large national park is just within reasonable reach from Sydney, but make sure you give yourself enough travel time! Don't be shy of heading up to check it out however as it is home of some awesome hiking spots.

Pearl Beach to Patonga

This walk will trick you into thinking you're on holiday if you are looking for a hike to do on a sunny weekend afternoon. I feel the photos below don't do the views justice as you look over the beautiful Broken Bay. Take your time to explore the Pearl caves and don't forget to bring swimmers to go for a dip at Pearl beach.

Lane Cove National Park

This local staple can't be overlooked for some solid bushwalking options to fill an empty weekend or day off. Water dragon sightings by the rivers edge are virtually guaranteed and keep yourself occupied with some bird watching as you hike.

Lane Cove Valley Walking Track

Enjoy some bush in the city on this track which walks along the waters edge, and watch kayakers go by listening to the sounds of cicadas. Look out for hyacinth orchards which can occasionally be hidden in the scrub.
